Kenneth Nolan was a student of Josef Albers. He took his teachings and expanded on them immensely, and was considered on of the greatest colorists of the 20th century.   In his obituary from the New York Times, Clement Greenberg is quoted in Art International: "His color counts by its clarity and its energy; it is not the neutrally, to be carried by the design and drawing; it does the carrying itself."  Below are some examples of his work as it progressed over the decades.  I love that he went back to painting circles.  Life is cyclical, don't we so often end of where we started?  Clearly, in his case it was with more strength and experience. ,
